Mixed with henna, indigo dyes the hair brown (depending on the proportions and the initial color); applied to the hair after henna, the indigo dyes it glossy black.
Indigo is a powder from the plant Indigofera Tinctoria, which is used in combination with henna for coloring the hair in dark shades. It does not contain chemicals.
Applied by itself, indigo will give the hair bluish-greenish hues. Mixed with henna, this plant dyes the hair chestnut (depending on the proportions and initial color: more indigo = darker color and fewer reddish tones). Applied on the hair after henna, indigo dyes it shiny black. It can be used as often as you wish.
Composition (INCI): Indigofera Tinctoria
Recipes with indigo
For chestnut hair - henna + indigo in one step:
Prepare a paste from henna and let it sit for 2-12 hours. When ready, in a separate container, mix indigo with cool water, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, no more, so as not to lose its color. Add the ready indigo to the henna mixture and stir well; you may add a little water to achieve a yogurt-like consistency. Apply on dry or damp hair, fully covering the hair from root to tip. Wrap in plastic and a towel and leave on the hair for 2-6 hours. Wash with shampoo or just conditioner.
For black or very dark chestnut hair - two steps:
Apply on your hair first henna, prepared in the usual way - for a saturated red base. Wait a few hours, wash and lightly dry the hair. Mix indigo with warm water, and for a more intensive result add 1 tsp of table salt per 100g of indigo powder - for an even darker color. Apply the mixture immediately to dry or damp, freshly henna'd hair, covering it evenly along the entire length. It is easiest to start from the back, gradually sectioning the hair (Use old towels and gloves!). Wrap the hair well and leave for 1-2 hours; wash with water only or with shampoo.
